Japanese Calligraphy in Berlin

Japan developed their own writing system, which combines the adapted Chinese characters (Kanji 漢字) with two different Japanese phonetic scripts (Hiragana-ひらがな and Katakana-カタカナ). Hiragana and Katakana originate from Chinese characters.

"Shodo" is the Japanese expression for calligraphy. The word Shodo consists out of two Chinese characters 書道, which mean "the way of writing". By doing calligraphy, you can not only learn how to write characters and master techniques, but also write creatively with a brush and black ink.

I am Saiu Minagawa, a Japanese calligrapher who has mor than 30 years of experience and received awards at a major calligraphy exhibition in Japan.

I give a workshop in Berlin and teach at the Japanese-German Center Berlin in Dahlem. It is my great pleasure to share with you the wonderful experience through Shodo calligraphy.
